"In this work, when it
shall be found that much is omitted, let it not be forgotten that much
likewise is performed" (Dr. Samuel Johnson, Preface to Dictionary
of the English Language) .
While every effort has been made to ascertain the correctness of the information
provided in this section, some of the dates, especially those of the medieval
period, may be approximate. Birth dates are included for contemporary Welsh
men and women whenever they have been provided. Regrettably, it is impossible
to include every person who has contributed in someway to the history,
culture, language, or traditions of Wales, either at home or abroad. Some
names are included for their unusual character of special interest. In
the Welsh alphabet, Ch, Dd, Ff, Ng, Ll, Rh, Th, andPh are considered as
single letters. To save confusion for non-Welsh readers, entries follow
the order of the English alphabet. The following letters do not occur in
the Welsh alphabet: J, K.Q,V, X, Z. (when names begin with any of these
letters, they are borrowings from English).
